Fine Rug Cleaning & Care FAQs

A: Yes. Our primary specialty is the museum-grade cleaning and historical repair of hand-knotted textiles. We provide tailored care for fine Persian, Oriental, and traditional Turkish Kilims, as well as specialty brands like Safavieh and Karastan. Our services encompass luxury natural fibers (wool, silk, cotton, jute, sisal, sheepskin, and hide) as well as contemporary viscose and designer pieces.

A: Absolutely not. Running an industrial hot steam cleaner over a fine natural-fiber rug can warp the structural foundation, melt natural lanolin oils, cause organic dyes to bleed, and permanently ruin the textile. Fine rugs should only be washed using traditional, temperature-controlled hand-washing methods.

A: Industry experts recommend having fine Persian and Oriental rugs professionally deep-cleaned every 3 to 5 years. Regular vacuuming is great for surface maintenance, but professional washing removes deeply embedded grit and dust that slowly shears away at foundational fibers over time.

A: We strongly advise against DIY deep cleaning. Submerging an authentic rug at home without specialized color-stabilizers often causes severe color bleeding. Furthermore, domestic spaces lack the controlled air-drying environments required to prevent dangerous mold, mildew, and structural wood-rot from developing in a wet rug foundation.

Understanding Authentic Persian & Oriental Rugs

A: Historically, an authentic Persian rug is a hand-knotted textile produced specifically within the regional borders of modern-day Iran (ancient Persia). These pieces are globally renowned for their dense, asymmetrical hand-knotted structures, curvilinear floral architecture, and unparalleled design precision.

A: You are investing in a physical piece of history. A single authentic rug is hand-woven by master artisans over a span of months—and occasionally more than a decade. The compounding value stems from three major traits:

  • The Complexity of the Knit: Tens of thousands of individual, hand-tied knots create intricate, sweeping curves rather than blocky geometric paths.

  • Premium Organic Materials: Woven out of high-grade natural silks and live-sheared wool rich in natural lanolin, giving the rug a deep sheen that grows more beautiful with age.

  • Artistic Preservation: Every authentic piece is a non-replicated canvas showcasing cultural motifs, family lineage, and historical symbolism.

A: Flip the rug over and carefully examine the underside.

  • The Backside Design: On a hand-knotted rug, the pattern and colors on the back will match the front perfectly. Machine-made rugs typically have a cloudy, muffled pattern on the back or are covered by a hard plastic or canvas backing.

  • Individual Knots: Look closely at the structural grid. Authentic rugs display uneven, individual knots that vary slightly in size—imperfections prove human handiwork. Machine rugs feature perfectly straight, uniform lines.

  • The Fringe: An authentic rug’s fringe is an extension of its internal warp threads (the foundation itself). If the fringe is visibly sewn or glued onto the end of the rug, it is machine-made.
